mn98:7.1 “We’re both authorized masters
mn98:7.2 of the three Vedas.
mn98:7.3 I’m a student of Pokkharasāti,
mn98:7.4 and he of Tārukkha.
mn98:7.5 We’re fully qualified
mn98:7.6 in all the Vedic experts teach.
mn98:7.7 As philologists and grammarians,
mn98:7.8 we match our tutors in recitation.
mn98:7.9 We have a dispute
mn98:7.10 regarding genealogy.
mn98:7.11 For Bhāradvāja says that
mn98:7.12 one is a brahmin due to birth,
mn98:7.13 but I declare it’s because of one’s deeds.
mn98:7.14 Oh Clear-eyed One, know this as our debate.
mn98:7.15 Since neither of us was able
mn98:7.16 to convince the other,
mn98:7.17 we’ve come to ask you, sir,
mn98:7.18 renowned as the awakened one.
mn98:7.19 As people honor with cupped palms
mn98:7.20 the moon on the cusp of waxing,
mn98:7.21 bowing, they revere
mn98:7.22 Gotama in the world.
mn98:7.23 We ask this of Gotama,
mn98:7.24 the Eye arisen in the world:
mn98:7.25 is one a brahmin due to birth,
mn98:7.26 or else because of deeds?
mn98:7.27 We don’t know, please tell us,
mn98:7.28 so we can recognize a brahmin.”
